College Idiots...
From the Army Times:
Recruiters leave college job fairAssociated PressSANTA CRUZ, Calif. — Military recruiters left a campus job fair when about 60 student and faculty anti-war demonstrators showed up outside the event at the University of California, Santa Cruz.
Four recruiters from the Army and Army National Guard left after an hour-long standoff Tuesday at the College 8 West Field House.
“The recruiters thought the crowd was getting out of control,” campus vice chancellor David Kliger said.
“This is about creating a community where we make the change we want to see in the world,” student Sam
Aranke said.
One student protester was arrested as the recruiters were departing in a van. While a campus police officer was videotaping a person throwing rocks at the van, a student blocked the camera and was cited for interfering with police duties, campus spokesman Jim Burns.
The student was released pending a decision by the district attorney’s office on whether charges would be filed.

“This is about creating a community where we make the change we want to see in the world,” student Sam Aranke said. OK, not enough drug busting going on at this campus or too much tinfoiling going on...
What world exactly does this child live in? Certainly not the real world where the Taliban and al-Queda exist... the people that would torture and behead him for voicing an opinion.
Certainly not the real world where Iran is developing nuclear weapons (please don't give me that crap about needing an alternate energy source for a country with the 3rd largest oil reserves in the world... puuuhleeze).
Certainly not the real world where countries like North Korea and Iran threaten their neighbors with military harm because their ideologies are not the same as their neighbors? Countries that have vowed to wipe other countries off the map? Countries that do not hesitate to interfere in the politics and dealings of the democratically elected government of neighboring countries?
Certainly not in a world where the likes of Saddam Hussein still exist. And then there's Bosnia... and Kosovo... and Darfur... I repeat, what world does this child and those people live in?
Can this idiot really believe that "his world" can exist without a strong and effective, well-trained military?? Just who (or is that whom?) does he think will protect and safeguard his right to assemble? His freedom of speech (you know, in this case, his right to be wrong!)? Who will stand and guard all his freedoms and his way of life? Certainly not little pantywaisted students throwing rocks (throwing rocks?? throwing rocks??) at people trying to do their jobs.
If these people -- including the supposedly well-educated professors -- object to the war, why aren't they out harrassing and picketing the elected members of Congress? And why do they believe that the exercise of their right to an opinion is greater than the rights of others expressing theirs, e.g., by speaking with the recruiters and joining the military, which, I might add, is an honest and honorable profession? The recruiters didn't invent the military or the need for one.
I have said before: these kind of people just need to get out of the way and let the recruiters do their jobs. There is no strongarming going on. We have an all volunteer military comprised of people who can see the larger picture and know that only in a utopian world can there be no need for the military. And unless you live in the world of these 60 protesters, that world does not yet exist.

Amen to that.
Air Force Wife pointed out on my blog that this school doesn't even issue GRADES.
They also received an amazing amount of federal money last year.
I am still in favor of the idea of military spouses volunteering to be the "buddies" these recruiters take to "work" with them...I'm thinking I'd be good at that.
UC Santa Cruz does, in fact, issue grades. See their official Web site: http://admissions.ucsc.edu/discover/faq/academics.cfm
I was a senior editor at Army Times for more than four years before and after 9/11. I grew up in a military family, spending years overseas as part of the military community. But I could not tacitly support this ongoing Bush family fetish for things Arab or be a lap dog for the Bush administration as a part of the well-trained mainstream media. Everyone is making lots of money at the corporate level while people like your kids are dying. When you feel content exchanging the lives of your family members for flags and the thanks of a grateful corporate sponsor, then you are the one missing the big picture. That the generals are speaking out should alert the American people that something is very, very wrong here. You and your friends need to wake up and save the lives of your loved ones in service before it's too late. Use your freedom of speech instead to stop an ungrateful, greedy, unamerican, corrupt administration from getting more of us killed.
Dear Anonymous (they are just so darn brave!)
This post wasn't about whether the war was right or wrong or whether we are for the war or not... It was about imbeciles making imbecilic statements about making changes to their world by (a) blocking military recruiters just doing their jobs, and (b) interfering with other people's right to speak with the military recruiters. The appropriate avenue for change is by protesting the appropriate people (i.e., the Congress) and at the ballot box.
And in your case, you're too enamored of Michael Moore and his conspiracy theory friends... your tinfoil is showing.
You have to LOVE the cloak of anonymity.
Stepping to the side of the actual point of your post for a moment, SSM, (which, btw, was crystal clear to me) "anonymous" brings up some interesting questions for me.
How many generals??? Oh, yes, a half dozen of THOUSANDS...and don't three of them have books to sell at the moment? How convenient that their dissatisfaction of things coincides with their 15 minutes of literary fame.
My other question is, just what is the exact issue these retired guys have problems with? Rumsfeld is mean & hurts people's feelings? It isn't preschool so he doesn't have to use "kind words", does he?
Oh, and as for the grades, from 1965 through 1997, it was impossible for students at this institution to receive a GPA, because they didn't issue grades only written performance evaluations.

And, even now (according to anony. link), up to 25% of a students' classes can be taken pass/fail...at my university, that could be up to 30+credit hours.
Sad.
